Program Details of the Clevite NASCAR Engine Builder of the Year Award

Clevite Engine Parts has honored NASCAR engine builders, the sport's hidden heroes, for 13 years. Charlie Siegars, engine builder for Jeff Gordon's Dupont Automotive Finishes Chevrolet, Hendrick Motorsports car #24, won the 1998 Clevite Engine Parts NASCAR Engine Builder of the Year award. Siegars also won the award in 1995, 96 & 97, making him the only man to win 4 consecutive years.

The prestigious NASCAR Engine Builder of the Year award is presented to the top engine builders competing in the following NASCAR series: Winston Cup, Craftsman Truck, Busch Grand National, Busch Grand National North and Winston West. Grand prize amounts for the series are as follows: Winston Cup first place = $50,000, second place = $20,000 and third place = $10,000; Craftsman Truck first place = $10,000; Busch Grand National first place = $10,000; Busch Grand National North first place = $5,000; Winston West first place = $1,000.

To be eligible for the award, all race teams receive a NASCAR Engine Builder of the Year application from Clevite, identifying eligibility requirements and the scoring procedure. This application must be signed by the vehicle owner, team sponsor (if any), driver and designated engine builder. Copies are returned to both Clevite Engine Parts and NASCAR. To receive top prize, the engine builder must use Clevite® Engine Parts, display a Clevite® Engine Parts decal, and wear a Clevite Engine Parts/NASCAR Engine Builder patch on their race-day uniform.

The top 15 finishing positions, according to the official NASCAR race reports, receive points starting at 15 points for 1st place on down to 1 point for 15th place. Bonus points are awarded to starting positions 1, 2 and 3 (pole position=5 points, 2nd=3 points and 3rd=1 point). Also, five (5) additional bonus points are awarded for the car that leads the most laps per race, according to the NASCAR race report. The engine builder from each series with the most points at the end of the year is awarded a check and the title of Clevite NASCAR Engine Parts Engine Builder of the Year. In addition, the NASCAR Winston Cup winner receives a trophy and the coveted Clevite NASCAR Engine Parts Engine Builder of the Year 14k gold ring.

"This award is recognition for all the hard work and dedication the entire race team devotes throughout the year under the leadership of the designated engine builder," stated Siegars. "Just as a driver doesn't win a race by himself, winning engine builders need strong teams behind them."
